HALEP, SVITOLINA REACH FRENCH OPEN ROUND OF 16
Romanian Simona Halep and third seed Elina Svitolina have reached the round of 16 of the French Open
Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep will return to world number one if she wins a third Grand Slam title in Paris. The Croatian comprehensively defeated American teenager Amanda Anisimova 6-0 6-1 to reach the last 16 at Roland Garros in just 54 minutes.
Halep, who won her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in 2018, will now face Polish teenager Iga Swiatek. "I played a really good match, I was really aggressive," said 29-year-old Halep, who made just seven unforced errors. She added: "I knew I had to change something from last year, I wanted to be better than that and I was."
Similarly, 26-year-old third seed Elina Svitolina also recorded a straight-set victory over Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova. The two-time Roland Garros quarterfinalist, who is aiming to win her first Grand Slam title, won 6-4 7-5 in one hour and 40 minutes.The Ukrainian disappointingly exited the French Open in the third-round in 2018 and 2019, but has now reached the fourth round, which is going to be a morale booster.
She said after the match: "It was not easy, going into the match I knew she would strike the ball hard and flat, so I had to adjust quickly with my feet. It was important to stay focused."
